A small rash or your child’s nose turning red after consumption of a particular food can be a sign
of an undiagnosed food allergy. Here at fitterfly, our experts want every mother to understand
basic differences between food allergies and food intolerances in children.

Food allergies and food intolerances- are both different
Food allergy involves the immune system of your child as a natural mechanism to combat any
food particles that your body may perceive to be harmful. It usually stimulates the body to create
antibodies to fight against a particular food allergen (possible food component causing allergy)
On the other hand, food intolerance is your body’s inability to digest any food causing
symptoms of indigestion and an unpleasant feeling that is rarely dangerous.

Signs to help you rule out food allergies and food intolerances in
children:

Reaction to food allergies are highly individualistic, differing from person to person. Common
symptoms are as follows:

1. Gastrointestinal tract- Stomach distention, sudden onset of abdominal pain after
consumption of a particular food, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

2. Respiratory tract- Running nose, wheezing sounds on breathing, sudden onset of cold and
cough, red swollen and itchy nose with shortness of breath in severe cases.

3. Cardiovascular system- sudden onset of chest pain, light headedness and fainting.

4. Skin- Itchy red skin with inflammation, swelling of lips, tongue and mouth. Skin reactions are
also seen to be more commonly occurring reactions in children.

5. In extreme severe conditions of food allergies, a food reaction commonly called as
anaphylaxis is a combination of more than two signs listed above which can become life
threatening and needs early treatment.

Reaction to food intolerances are usually mild involving burning sensation in the
gastric system, belching, bloating, nervousness, loose motions and even
headaches.
